History of Valley View Cemetery
According to the history presented by Eunice Taylor Booher in 1937, this cemetery was established in
the spring of 1895 on approximately 2 acres at the northeast corner of the Wm.
H. Kennedy homestead.
The earliest burial we now know about was Ida Blizzard Garnett, March 8,
1895. That places the establishment of the cemetery before the Kickapoo
opening. Exactly why the Kennedy's set aside this parcel for a cemetery remains
an unsolved mystery, but we hope that the exploration of family relationships
will uncover some clues. For several years, it served the community of
Garnettville.
|
Burials before Luther was founded in 1898 are clearly
those of Garnettville families, but this list covers those through the
1900 census so that the census can be compared with land records to
determine where families lived. |

As Garnettville was absorbed by Luther, more families
used this cemetery and photos that can be dated to late 1912 show the north
fence being taken down for the first expansion into the adjoining
homestead. That expansion apparently extended to what is now the center
driveway.
In the late 1920s, the area north of the center driveway was
opened. In the 1930s, the old fences were replaced by the current rock
wall. Responsibility for the cemetery itself was taken over by the city of Luther and
it wasSeptember 07, 1899 renamed the "Luther Cemetery".
