Dye Families

Contact:  Sharon McAllister

At this point, there are far more questions than answers about the DYE families of early Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma Territory.  We have a number of examples in which a DYE married into one of the pioneer families of the Luther area, but so far nothing that links the DYEs themselves together.  Please write if you recognize any of these names.

Descendants of Emery Dye

1 Dye, Emery b: January 1886 in Kansas d: Aft. 1900

Emery is a major mystery.  On the 1900 census for Dewey Township, he was listed as a lodger in the household of J. ? & M. H. GAMBRELL. They had been married for 15 years, with no children, but had three "lodgers" in the household of which Emery was the oldest.  Both of Emery's parents were born in Illinois, which suggest the possibility that he was related to Martin.

Descendants of Evaline Dye

Generation No. 1

1. EVALINE1 DYE was born March 18, 1867. She married JOHN WESLEY BROWN. He was born February 23, 1863 in St. Francois Co., MO.

Child of EVALINE DYE and JOHN BROWN is:

2. i. ELBERT BERTRUM2 BROWN, b. January 18, 1885, St. Francois Co., MO; d. March 13, 1969, Okarche, Kingfisher Co., OK.

Generation No. 2

2. ELBERT BERTRUM2 BROWN (EVALINE1 DYE) was born January 18, 1885 in St. Francois Co., MO, and died March 13, 1969 in Okarche, Kingfisher Co., OK. He married MARY MAGDALIN ELIZABETH BEDNAR January 14, 1909 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co. OK, daughter of JOHN BEDNAR and MARY KURCEVA. She was born March 25, 1885 in Czechoslovakia, and died September 03, 1959 in El Reno, OK.

Children of ELBERT BROWN and MARY BEDNAR are:

i. GERTRUDE MARIE3 BROWN, b. December 06, 1910.

ii. MARY EVALINA BROWN, b. January 06, 1913.

iii. RAYMOND JOSEPH BROWN, b. December 07, 1916.

iv. RUBYE MAE BROWN, b. May 15, 1920.

v. ANNA BELLE BROWN, b. April 06, 1922.

vi. MARGARET HETTIE BROWN, b. January 27, 1925.

vii. BETTY JEAN BROWN, b. March 19, 1927.

The BEDNAR family lived in Spring Creek Township.  Evaline's daughter-in-law had a brother, John BEDNAR, who moved to Luther soon after the town was established and became a prominent businessman there.  Whether this DYE / BROWN family has ties to families of nearby Britton Township who share those surnames is yet to be determined.

Descendants of Martin Dye

1 Dye, Martin b: Unknown in Illinois

......... 2 Dye, Elmer Alonzo b: May 20, 1890 in Horton Kansas d: January 20, 1948 in Phoenix, AZ

............. +Haug, Pheba M. b: May 1900

I can't actually place either Martin or Elmer in the Luther area -- except for Elmer's marriage to Pheba HAUG, daughter of William HAUG & Sarah [maiden name unknown].

Descendants of Romola Evelyn Dye

Generation No. 1

1. ROMOLA EVELYN1 DYE was born September 11, 1903. She married CALVIN HARMAN KING February 17, 1923, son of JOHN KING and ALICE BROWN. He was born October 14, 1899, and died March 26, 1970.

Child of ROMOLA DYE and CALVIN KING is:

i. CALVIN HARMAN2 KING, JR., b. Unknown.

The KING / BROWN line lived in Britton, Oklahoma Co. and one of her brothers married into one of the oldest Luther families, but I have not been able to discover a link between the DYEs of Britton and those who lived closer to Luther. Note that one of her sisters also married a DYE.

Descendants of Walter B. Dye

Generation No. 1

1. WALTER B.1 DYE was born January 07, 1897, and died August 28, 1964. He married MARGARET MARY KING June 05, 1926, daughter of JOHN KING and ALICE BROWN. She was born December 25, 1902, and died January 27, 1993.

Children of WALTER DYE and MARGARET KING are:

i. ALINE2 DYE, b. Unknown.

ii. DOROTHY ANN DYE, b. Unknown.

iii. THOMAS KING DYE, b. Unknown.

The KING / BROWN line lived in Britton, Oklahoma Co. and one of her brothers married into one of the oldest Luther families, but I have not been able to discover a link between the DYEs of Britton and those who lived closer to Luther.  Note that one of her sisters also married a DYE.

William Dye & Emily Sewart

Generation No. 1

1. UNKNOWN1 SEWART was born Unknown in Virginia. He married ELIZA "SEWART". She was born May 1835 in Indiana, and died Aft. 1900.

Children of UNKNOWN SEWART and ELIZA "SEWART" are:

i. EMILY R.2 SEWART, b. November 1853, Missouri; d. Aft. 1900; m. WILLIAM DYE, Abt. 1894; b. July 1841, Missouri; d. Aft. 1900.

ii. FRED. G. SEWART, b. December 1875, Missouri; d. Aft. 1900.

According to the 1900 census, William & Emily were married about 1894.  Her entry shows that she'd had no children, but William's entry has a partially-erased notation of 5 children and the dates suggest that this might have been a second marriage for both.  They lived in Spring Creek Township, so may well have been related to the DYEs of nearby Britton Township but I have no proof.
