You are our 126thvisitor since October 7, 1999 - thanks for stopping by!

Census data are a lot like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle - except that in addition to filling in a gap, every piece you put in attracts a few more. So come in and join us. Take a look at the pieces already on the table. What patterns do you see emerging? Do you have some pieces that would fit in? |
Everything here is second-hand. Some are transcriptions posted to the Obion Co. GenWeb site while others are entries I've transcribed myself - and if you have transcribed census data for any of these families we welcome it, too. We've also included our interpretations, based on comparisons with other sources, but if you spot an interesting clue we urge you to consult and interpret the original records yourself. |
This study started several years ago with a cluster of COLE families who lived in the old Crystal Community, part of District 3 of the 1850 census (households 617 through 727). A large portion of the pieces of our puzzle still pertain to that area, but it has expanded to include not just data for these families for 1830 through 1880, but also for all other COLEs we've found in Obion Co. and
a number of inter-married families. |
For the 1830 and 1840 Census, ages of individuals have been determined by comparing later data for these families with the Schedule, which is:
Male-Females, 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, then in increments of 10. |

Where possible, individuals have been linked together and presented as family lines. |
Three COLE lines have been identified in Obion County, and although they may connect back in the Carolinas we have no proof. |
John Henry COLE arrived by 1830. [See also the Hickman Co., KY page.] |
John A. COLE arrived by 1865. |
Joseph Benjamin COLE arrived by 1880. He was the son of Samuel COLE and Elizabeth Holcomb. [See also the Carroll Co. TN and Hickman Co. KY page.] |
There are at least three CROCKETT lines in Obion County, which oral tradition says are distantly linked but as far as I know this remains unproven. |
Archibald, Jennette, John Potts, and William CROCKETT (children of Isaac CROCKETT and Gracy POTTS) arrived by 1850. |
