Heads of Households on the 1900 Census of Luther Township

Sharon's Place

Oklahoma Co. GenWeb

OKGenWeb

USGenWeb

Two hundred twenty-four families were enumerated in Luther Township on the 1900 census, but many parts of it are extremely difficult to read. When I tried to simply transcribe it, I found I had more question marks than data - so decided I'd take a different approach.

Links in this table therefore lead to reports that combine census data with information from other sources, but they do serve to indicate the family's presence in Luther Township by 1900. The homesteaders I didn't find on the census still appear at the top of the chart, as I am trying to find out what happened to each of them. The Dwellings follow, in the order in which they were enumerated.

How'd She Do That?

Among the relatively few entries that were clearly readable, I recognized some Heads of Household as the original, successful homesteaders and some as the surviving spouse or children of the original homesteader. Some homesteaders, of course, I know to have moved to town after Luther was founded - so they would not be found living on their farms. I recognized others as early businessmen, or farmers who leased the set-aside compensatory school lands. So I determined to make the best use I could of the clearly readable portions of the census by comparing them with other available information.

I started by plotting the locations of homesteaders' dwellings on a Township map and used that to determine an approximate area covered by each page of the census. With an average of 11-12 families per page, that brought the possibilities to be explored down to a manageable level.

Using my annotated map as a guide, I found I could decipher quite a few more entries by comparing the census page with land records. At this point, the map began to show both the census taker's route and some intriguing gaps in coverage.

With a list of landowners from 1907, a map with dwellings and old roads, and the help of Ceil's Circle, I was able to fill in quite a few of those gaps. We already had extensive data for many of them, so it was simply a matter of cross-checking the database entry for the suggested candidate against the census itself to bring something that looked like "T or F or H ~~~~~" into focus as "Thomas".

In assembling this table, I did not start fresh but added the dwelling # from the census to a copy of my table of homesteaders. Faster, easier, and an automatic cross-check of my mapping procedure. I had intended to remove any homesteaders I couldn't account for, but noticed that when a homesteader was living somewhere else in 1900 there was usually a story behind it - so I kept those entries and added their tidbits. There are still some blanks, however, because we're still trying to link some homesteaders with those who occupied their farms in 1900 - whether it passed to a family member, was rented, or sold to an outsider.

At least, I finally have a reasonable guess at the surname of almost every Head of Household. There are still many question marks in the table for people I haven't found in other records, but I do believe it is now complete enough to share and know from my own experience that tying census records to location reveals more clues to be followed. Enjoy!

The Homesteader's Stories

Alward, Elizabeth

Married homesteader James Monroe Morgan and is enumerated with him in Dwelling # 144 as Family # 150. I believe that they had moved to town at this point and had rented both homesteads.

Atteberry, Rosa Etta

Married Mark Lafayette Sanders. I haven't found them on the census, but suspect they were living in Deep Fork Township as her homestead was on the township line. Rosa Etta's homestead was rented in 1900 and she died in 1901.

Blizzard Family

In 1900, John A. "Al" Blizzard, his brother Burton, and sister Lora (with her husband John Mitch and their child) are shown as living in the household headed by their widowed mother, Margaret Bowers Blizzard. Margaret's own homestead, however, was over in Deep Fork Township. I do not know whether it had been rented or sold, but she had moved in with one of her sons and I think it most likely to have been Burton. Al had buried his first wife, Emma Morgan, in 1895 and then sold part of his homestead to be platted as the town of Luther.

Cole, James S.

&

Cole, Tolbert F.

Born in 1833, Tolbert was among the older of the area's homesteaders. The 1900 census finds him living near his nephews over in Deep Fork Township and the James S. Cole, whose homestead was adjacent to his in Luther Township is unaccounted for. I do not know what happened to James or whether the story that he was related to Tolbert is actually true. I also don't know whether their homesteads had been rented or sold in 1900.

Delaporte, Elida

Apparently their father was either already dead or in very poor health - the stories don't agree, except on the point that Elida was the only child old enough to make the Run of '91 so she staked the claim. On the 1900 census, she appears in the household headed by her mother, who is listed by her maiden name of Mary Stahley instead of Mary Delaporte, but the family is obviously living on Elida's claim. Portions of her homestead became the first and second Delaporte additions of the town of Luther.

Dial, John

John died in 1899. On the 1900 census, his widow was shown as living in the household of their son William but the Dwelling # suggests that all were actually living on the family homestead.

Edwards, Elizabeth

Listed in the household of her father, George Edwards, on the 1900 census. The Dwelling #, however, suggests that the family was living on her claim. According to the census, only three of the nine children born to her mother were still living. Her two sisters are accounted for, married and living in the area. I do now know what happened to Elizabeth.

Edwards, Ellen

By 1900, had married David Stull and was therefore listed in his household. From the Dwelling #, I'd say that they were living on her homestead.

Illy, Bertha

I do not know what happened to Bertha. Her homestead was on the Deep Fork Township line, which complicates research. She did have at least two married daughters in the area. Lucy Danor, who had died in 1899, and Mary Hamilton. I have not been able to determine exactly where Mary and her husband "Hamp" lived, or when they moved away. It is certainly possible that they lived on Bertha's homestead and when they left the area she moved with them.

Luster, Moses

Died in 1897. His widow and their son MacDonald Luster were found living on the homestead in 1900.

Morgan, Jane

Although her claim was filed as "Jennie", she was usually called Jane. On the 1900 census, she is listed with her sister Annie and brother-in-law Ephraim Perkins. Soon thereafter, she moved to town and rented her farm but never sold it.

Rogers, Mart

As far as I know, Mart lived in and around Luther from the time he staked his claim until his death in 1975 - yet I have been unable to find him on the 1900 census. There's a William Rogers living in the area around Mart's homestead, but I haven't been able to determine the relationship, if any.

Ruble, Harvey

He married Sadie Friend, daughter of Deep Fork homesteader T. C. Friend, and moved to the Arcadia area.

Simmons, Martha Lodeski

The story I heard was that their father was either dead or already in very poor health and "Dosky" made the run because she was the oldest of the siblings still at home and her brother wasn't yet of age. Their mother died in 1895, and the 1900 census finds her brother now married and living with Doski on the family homestead - but he is now listed as the head of the family and a renter.
